Yulka Wilam I Forgot Where It Was
Break time. We’ve been driving a long time. So long that I no longer know if it’s been a few hours, stretching into infinity, or days. I just remember fragments. The fire we passed that night everyone was arguing, grey sand burning feet, sofas in a glass cabinet by the roadside.
Break time. I’m standing on the pale earth, watching people spilling out of the bus. Now they’re wandering past me lazily, back and forth. I see two boys guessing makes of cars driving past. I hear scraps of a phone conversation – a middle-aged man is telling his brother about planning a last minute holiday (I immediately remember sitting with someone by a blue swimming pool a few months ago).
Unfinished stories about me. Slogans, impressions, associations. Snippets about growing up, my nostalgia, peace and longing, I don’t even really know for what. A little about strange things glanced from the bus window when there’s no time to look properly.
