BERNARDO SOARES
Bernardo Soares The Book of Disquiet by Fernando Pessoa, 115 [177]
Bernardo Soares, b. 1888, Lisbon, Portugal, worked as a book-keeper for the textile company Vasquez & Co, on the fourth floor of a handsome building on the Rua dos Douradores. At night, returned to his rooms in the same street to write. Literature was the sole justification for his continued existence: ‘There is nothing real in life that is not more real for being beautifully described.’ For several decades was the indifferent narrator of his own autobiography. Unfinished after his death in 1935, it was eventually published in Portuguese in 1982.
