Discussion: From Photojournalist to Photographer; Photo by Basia Budniak
It was a weekend of meetings, presentations, books, and consultations! A lot happened! And thank you for being with us.
Many of you have had the opportunity to discuss their own artistic achievements with professionals during the Sixth Review Portfolio organised by the Foundation for the Visual Arts. Among the guests of this unique, interactive meeting were: Charlotte Cotton, Agnieszka Czarnecka, Hanna Rydlewska, Patrycja Kwas, Izabela Jaroszewska, Jason Evans, Bill Kouwenhoven, Saul Robbins, Wojciech Wieteska, Jakub Ĺwircz, Joanna Kinowska, PaweĹ FabjaĹski, Janek Zamoyski and PaweĹ Eibel.
The group interested in the training session at the photojournalism workshop had the opportunity to learn new skills on the two-day courses organised in collaboration with the Academy of Photography. Under the supervision of Jaroslaw Praszkiewicz, photographer of the country’s most important events, festivals, and events in culture, politics and show business, they got to know the principles of cooperation with the press and photographic agencies.
Together with the Archaeology of Photography Foundation, we started a unique social campaign as part of the Fotorejestr project. The campaign’s main goal was primarily to disseminate basic knowledge on the protection of home photo archives, and the need for a digital record. We showed how, with only a low cost and time, to save priceless images from the past which, whatever their artistic value, could be of great importance for studying the history of society and culture. The campaign was opened with a lecture by Karolina Lewandowska, who discussed issues surrounding the techniques for protecting private archives.
Remaining on topics close to collecting, we invited gallerists, collectors, art market experts and artists to a joint discussion. The Frames Mastered meeting provided an opportunity for interdisciplinary discussion with: Marcel Andin Velez, Ĺukasz Gorczyca, Wojciech JÄdrzejewski, Piotr Lelek, RafaĹ Lewandowski, Konrad PustoĹa and Maria Rubersz.
On Saturday, we also presented IS(not) – the result of an artistic collaboration between five Polish photographers and Icelandic writers. Together, while travelling, they tried to look at Iceland in a variety of aspects, and the fruit of their work comprises both word and image.
On Sunday, there was a discussion on the important issue of effective promotion strategies. These one-day workshops were directed especially at professional photographers and curators who want to deepen their knowledge on the role of marketing in photography.
At a presentation dedicated to self-publishing, we showed you photobooks of five selected projects from the ShowOFF Section: Yulka Wilam’s I forgot where it was, Karol Kaczorowski’s keikoku, BartĹomiej Lurka’s 25/25, Piotr Zbierski’s Voice On, and Tomasz Liboski’s and MichaĹ JÄdrzejowski’s Don’t mess with Texas. The limited edition books can still be purchased at the Festival Office.
Sunday’s discussion by photographers and photo editors organised at the Camelot Gallery was a desire to express disapproval of the position that the end of reportage in the print media was near.
At the end of the weekend, we organised a presentation of two extremely valuable books: Rough Cut and Congo In Limbo by Cedric Gerbehaye.
And Monday afternoon and the second week of the Festival is beginning psychologically... SNAP Me, Photology – psychology for photographers you’ll be able to participate in a discussion with Gosia Mrozek and Joanna Szeluga. The authors of the meeting will discuss the psychological factors that have a significant impact on their work and the effects visible in the photographs.
The classes will be an excellent opportunity to demonstrate practical knowledge of human personality, temperament and character. The meeting will attempt to answer basic questions: What are the determinants ozf perception, motivation and emotion? How to build relationships? How does self-esteem manifest itself? What are the psychological mechanisms for creating and reading photography? We’ll be trying to answer these and other questions at the Camelot Gallery at 17:00.
