First prize at this year’s sittcomm.award has been won by Maroš Krivý from Slovakia for his project New Coat of Paint. The other finalists are Marcin BociĹski, RafaĹ Milach and Petr Willert. The winning project may be seen on display in the WyspiaĹski 2000 Pavilion.
Maroš Krivý’s New Coat of Paint is a series of photographs showing communist apartment blocks, once gray, now painted in vivid colours. Krivý plays with the areas shown, but not in the obvious way: the photos are black and white, only captioned with the colours.
The project attempts to show that grey, although it is the colour of boredom and anonymity, has great potential for change, and Krivý also invites the audience to participate. It is they who can “create new full-colour situations in their imagination”.
Maroš Krivý (born 1981, in Bratislava, Slovakia) is a sociologist and photographer. In his photographic cycles I am a monument, Entropy and Notes on architecture, he has consistently engaged with public spaces. He is currently writing a doctorate in Helsinki at the Department of Urban Studies.
