These photographs were taken during my second trip to Japan, over a period of several weeks. I wanted to present my own impressions of this country. I had the opportunity to become a bit more closely acquainted with Japanese culture, to break down some barriers, including language ones. I wanted to avoid a superficial, ‘tourist’ treatment of Japan. I also knew there was no way to put myself in the position of a local. I was somewhere in-between. I didn’t know precisely what my aim was, but I did know the visual territory I wanted to explore. Strange places, interesting people, connected events and the baggage of experience I had related to Japan – all this went into making up the present photographs.
The exhibition is accompanied by sound recordings made in Aokigahara by
Jacob Kirkegaard, 2010.
Karol Kaczorowski (b. 1988, Warsaw) had a six-month scholarship at a secondary school in Tokyo in 2006. In 2010 he defended his diploma project at the ZPAF Photography Academy (in Andrzej Zygmuntowicz’s documentary studio). He studies Land Management at Warsaw University. He is pleased to see that the popularity of Asian cuisine in Warsaw is gradually increasing.
