NEVILLE LISTER Photomonth_kropki_duze

Neville Lister Fine Arts Center, University of Massachusetts, Amherst, January 2011. Official prison release form signed by the Head of the Johannesburg Prison for white males. The prisoner’s crime is given as ‘fraud’, and although the form provides a date of sentence (80/11/27) it also states that the prisoner was ‘unsentenced’

Neville Lister, b. 1962, Johannesburg, studied at the University of the Witwatersrand 1981–3. Moved to London and worked as a commercial photographer. Returned to South Africa in 1994. Exhibitions include Public][Private, Switch Box Gallery, Johannesburg, 2008, and his Thresholder series, portraits of people with their letterboxes, at the Pollak Gallery, Johannesburg, 2009. His latest work involves a cache of undelivered letters that belonged to a Dr Pinheiro, a Mozambican doctor who sought refuge in South Africa in 1975. Lister is tracking down the return addresses on some of these letters and photographing what he finds. For more information please contact: Claudia Fischhoff at the Pollak Gallery, Johannesburg.
