PHOTOMONTH IN KRAKOW — 2011
VIKTOR KOLĂĄĹ OSTRAVA
Photographer Viktor KoláĹ (1941) was born in Ostrava, Czechoslovakia. Since the late fifties he has systematically photographed his hometown, which is considered the most industrialized in the Czech Republic and for over fifty years has been known for its heavy industry.
The image of Ostrava recorded by KoláĹ has evolved over time. From the quasi-romantic imagery of the industrial landscape of the sixties to the subsequent reflection on the subjective way of documenting the period of normalisation in Czech society to the suppression of the Prague Spring by Russian tanks. The last 20 years have been presented by KoláĹ as times of the pluralistic development of democracy, but at the same time more and more consumerism in society.
In 2010 a book was published of 145 photographs of Ostrava which were taken between 1959 and 2009.
