WE ARE FAMILY
Great Britain, 2007, 60 min
After the stage when photographers were interested in showing what was around them – the city and its niches, forgotten spaces and “found” objects –they turned the lens on themselves and their families. The episode We Are Family shows what happens when the personal relationship between the artist and their environment is reflected in the pictures. How the nearest and dearest are shown – lovers, children – and strangers – accidentally encounters with passers-by, famous personalities. Finally, what happens when the photographer turns the lens on himself – what does the self-portrait try to show and what is it hiding. The fifth episode of the series shows the 1970s and 80s. It presents Diane Arbus’ famous photos of oddballs (including a portrait of Collin and Wood – a crazy boy holding a grenade in his hand, which was shown in the scenery of New York's Central Park), portraits of the stars, which were Richard Avedon’s speciality, Larry Clark’s and Nobuyoshi Araki’s diaries, or the uncomfortably personal portraits by Sally Mann and Richard Billingham, and the intimate portraits by Nan Goldin (including the famous shot showing the transgender Joey).
