Viviane Sassen (1972), a Dutch artist, achieved renown through her exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art in New York as well as commissions for The New York Times. She is also the recipient of major awards, including the Prix de Rome and International Center of Photography’s Infinity Award. An important source of inspiration for her art was a return to Kenya, where she grew up, along with expeditions to other African countries. For over a decade she has been creating dream-like works there, characterised by deep shades with neon colours shining through. In these images there are no clear boundaries between documentary and creative photography. The clarity of colour and compositional elegance of Sassen’s works also bring to mind the imagery of the fashion world, where she started out. As the artist herself says, the divide between artistic and advertising photography is artificial and incomprehensible, which is why she uses her own language, freely mixing various inspirations.
