Candida Höfer, born in 1944 in Eberswalde, like Thomas Ruff, Thomas Struth and Andreas Gurski, is a representative of the "Düsseldorf School of Photography". She took her first steps in the profession as a volunteer at the Fotostudio Schmölz-Huth in Cologne, where she later began her studies. In 1973, after a short stay in Hamburg where she worked as a photographer, she continued her education at the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf, first in the film, and from 1976 in Bernd Becher's photography class. Her first works were photos of Turkish immigrants in Germany. But she became well-known for her photographs of interiors. Since the 80s she has photographed museums, libraries, sports halls, hotels, auditoriums, halls and other public spaces, such as zoos. A characteristic feature of all her images is the absence of people, although the places she photographs are designed for them. Because of this, the artist brings to the fore the function of these objects and their style and architecture. Höfer has never photographed private places. Her work has been exhibited in the Kunsthalle in Nuremberg, the Kunsthalle in Hamburg, the Kunsthalle in Basel, and in the Sonnabend galleries in New York and Castello di Rivoli in Turin.
