"This silence needs to be excused somehow. You could say that time has stopped here, but there never really was any time here. There’s a void polishing the edge and dissolving colours. There’s also a tangle of human footprints pressed into faded carpets. The footsteps of prostitutes and men in suits, budget tourists (or the type who came here by accident), dodgy geezers in leather jackets, taxi drivers, black-market money changers—the only evidence of meaning. Everyone was here for just a moment. That’s why the time we know doesn’t exist in hotels. Where is this place? Perhaps it’s somewhere halfway between what there was and what there is? It doesn’t matter. A void and silence—also as an answer to the question “what next?” Places without time are condemned to extinction."
