PHOTOGRAPHY AS A TOOL OF SOCIAL CHANGE
PHOTOGRAPHY AS A TOOL OF SOCIAL CHANGE
Konrad PustoĹa
From its invention, photography’s has provided not only the means for mass reproduction—operating as a tool for mediation and bringing the atrocities of war closer to home—but it has been used to exert pressure on public opinion. Some of the other types of early “activist” photographic designs were documentation of poverty and underage workers, as well as government propaganda designs. In recent decades, when it began to seem that television had surpassed photography’s power to influence reality, technological changes opened up new opportunities. Electronic media and social-networking sites created the previously inaccessible option of direct, immediate, and global distribution of an image by anyone with access to the internet. However, to the same extent that these new technologies make it easier to spread a message, they can just as easily drown it out and blur it in the multitude of voices. The question arises as to the potential offered by new media in relation to the photographic image and the efficiency of its influence on social reality.
