What effect do photo banks have on the “image reality” that surrounds us? The vast majority of photographs we encounter every day—in the form of illustrations for texts and advertisements—come from international services offering hundreds of thousands, if not millions of pictures ready for use and tagged for searchability. The mechanisms by which stock photos are chosen and used are to a great extent decided by the political economy of mass usage of photographs—creating, in a chaotic, globalised way, a landscape of photographic representations of, for example, concepts, social processes, and discourses. What does success look like, and what about a happy family? And at what stage in the creative, social, and commercial processes is this decision taken?
