A while ago a friend gave me the book Leica – Handbuch, which he had found in a second-hand bookshop in Warsaw. At first glance, it was nothing special: just a nicely published photography handbook. My friend, a bibliophile and collector, probably wouldn’t have noticed it, had it not been for the date of publication: 1941. Leafing through the handbook’s pages, I came across a photograph presenting the capabilities of one of Leitz’s super-light lenses, which allowed you to capture group scenes in difficult light conditions. In the photo you can see straight rows of people giving the Nazi salute at an evening ceremony. In the background are flags with swastikas. Looking at the photograph, I wondered if I would find something similar in Polish handbooks for amateur photographers?
