The project is based on amateur VHS recordings depicting the daily and festive lives of Poles in the 1990s. The socio-economic changes in Polish society in this period – revealed in these films by private conversations, individual objects scattered around homes and snatches of television reports – are a mere background for the main hero of the film, who turns out to be the Cameraman. The anonymous and at the same time despotic director-operator as the only one possessing power over the reality he is showing. He continually oversteps the boundaries of privacy – not only of family members, but also of the accidental heroes of his films. We observe how a unique regime of looking emerges formed by televisual patterns, tips from camera manuals and “live” editing.
