Thomas Struth was born in 1954 in Geldern. He studied painting with Gerhard Richter and photography under the guidance of Bernd Becher at the Düsseldorf Kunstakademie. In the 70s he completely devoted himself to photography. He became famous through photography cycles of Street Architecture, which consists exclusively of monochrome images of empty streets in New York, and Portraits. A common theme in his work is Urban architecture: empty streets, squares, bridges, museums, and he is also a keen photographer of people and nature. His work also shows modern technologies and equipment which viewers do not meet every day, such as nuclear reactors. Struth’s photos are characterised by an innovative, unconventional approach to the subjects. His works are transparent and reflect the individual artist's point of view. Using a plate camera, he creates portraits of individuals, families, and couples. The protagonists of his photographs are serious and focused, their eyes turned to the camera lens. The precision with which he photographs enables the viewer to see details that are often difficult to grasp. Through his cycles of pictures, you can see how people from different cultural backgrounds and age groups are perceived by the artist. One such series is called "museum pictures", or photographs in which Thomas Struth shows how people in various museums round the world respond to works of art. Struth’s photographs have been exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, in Milan, Amsterdam, Washington, Tokyo and Israel.
