THE WORLD BY SIGHT – ON THE PHOTOGRAPHS OF JERZY LEWCZYĹSKI
Directed by: Peter Weychert
Script: Marika KuĹşmicz, Peter Weychert
Production: Museum in Gliwice | Media Kontakt Warsaw
The film is an intimate story about the work of renowned artist Jerzy LewczyĹski, in which the protagonist talks about his achievements as part of a closed exhibition.
Through his creative personality and comments, we get at the sense of meanings in LewczyĹski’s photography. The richness of the figures is also seen in the existential context which inevitably accompanies his stories about the world as seen through the photographic medium. The history of photography is often combined with stories of his life, and his intuitive approach to photography precedes the achievements of 20th-century photography in a wonderful way. According to Krzysztof Jurecki, LewczyĹski "is still waiting for his proper place in the history of world photography".
The camera, recording the selection of his photographs and the accompanying story built by the artist around the screening, shows the artist’s characteristic ephemeral form of creation, so difficult in a medium other than film. In analysing his own work autothematically, LewczyĹski becomes "his own archaeologist" in the film.
