PHOTOMONTH IN KRAKOW — 2010
THE HISTORY OF SPANISH PHOTOGRAPHY
PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOPS
Instructor: Román J. Navarro Carrasco (Spain)
Workshop description:
A survey of Spain’s nearly two-hundred-year history of photography. Its roots go back to the 1830s – the period when the first photographs appeared in France, England, etc. The oldest Spanish photographs hail from 1839. The workshops’ point of departure will be the role of photography in every epoch, alongside the other fields of art (cinema, music, painting, architecture, fashion, etc.). Such an approach to photography will allow the participants in the workshops to situate it in the context of various events in Spain itself, and outside its borders.
Every meeting will commence with a presentation of photographs characteristic of a given historical period. The photographs described will be a pretext for speaking about photography’s stage of development at a given moment, which famous photographers were active during the period, and a presentation of the wider social, political, or cultural context for the given era.
For example, the point of departure for a conversation about 19th-century photography will be a piece by Charles Clifford or J. Laurent; the civil war period will be represented by Agusta Centelles, and the 1950s and ‘60s by photographs by members of the AFAL group.
