Last weekend for Photomonth!

News date: 2011-06-11

This is the last weekend of the 9th Photomonth in Krakow Festival – and with it the last meetings dedicated to photography, the last chance to view any remaining exhibitions and the last joint events! Let’s spend this time together!

Saturday’s a day of meetings – all at the festival office in the Camelot Gallery. At 14:00 there’s a meeting devoted to a new edition of Witold Wirpsza’s Comments on photographs with Grzegorz Jankowicz and Krzysztof Siwczyk. Comments on photographs, one of the most fascinating books of poems of the last century, is only now achieving its proper place in Polish literature. Comments... arose in response to the extremely popular photographic exhibition The Family of Man, which in the 50s was viewed by over 9 million people. Wirpsza, originally delighted with the exhibition, changed his attitude when he realised that the message of individual photographs had been subordinated to certain general aesthetic and ideological assumptions. He decided to challenge the way of thinking about humanity represented by the exhibition organisers in the most natural way for him –  through extensive poetic polemics. At 16.00, there is Janusz Rosikoń’s meeting on the series “Artists speak”, which presents Polish photographic artists talking about their own works and inspirations, but also about the sphere of feelings and reactions to changing reality.
The last of the Saturday meetings will be devoted to self-publishing. Together with ArtBazaar, we’d like to invite you to the premiere of a new series of books dedicated to contemporary photography. Perhaps it’ll be just the encouragement you need to start collecting photography and art books which may also become collectible. The first publication in the series is devoted to Jerzy Lewczyński and his photographs showing the communist period. Lewczyński presents the PRL, focusing especially on the absurd aspects of the bygone eras, which often took on a grotesque and ridiculous light.
Saturday evening finishes in the Manggha Centre of Japanese Culture and Technology for Radiofonia’s birthday! The party crowning this year’s Photomonth in Krakow instances features two rising stars from the Ninja Tune label – Eskmo and King Cannibal.

Eskmo is the pseudonym of Brendan Angelides, a composer and producer from San Francisco. He draws from various genres of electronica and abstract hip-hop while maintaining his own character. Eskmo’s work has gained recognition from Amon Tobin himself and the bosses of the Ninja Tune label, which has resulted in a contract and an album. His performance is a detailed treat, both musical and visual.

King Cannibal – actually Dylan Richards – is a British DJ and producer. “Let The Night Roar”, his debut album for Ninja Tune, has been called a revelation. Thanks to the thunderous mix of dubstep, dancehall and quotes from electronics geniuses, and his thrilling sets, he has gained audience recognition worldwide.

Sunday is the last call for viewing the remaining exhibitions! Which ones haven’t you seen yet? Come and enjoy them!
