Meeting with Chris Niedenthal, photo Luka Ĺukasiak
As with every previous festival Saturday, this one, too, is filled to the brim with photographic rarities. We have something for you on collecting, something on self-publishing, we’ll show you photos by Ĺukasz Gniadek, and attack with sensitivity in the company of the Warsaw City Rockers.
At 14:00 we invite everyone interested in what a collector of photography actually does. Will photography in Poland be perceived – just like the other arts – as a way of adding to your capital? Is it worth collecting Polish photography, and what criteria should you follow when creating a collection? These and many other issues will be discussed by PoznaĹ collector Cezary PieczyĹski. The meeting, which will take place in the Camelot Gallery, will be chaired by Marta Eloy-Cichocka.
Immediately after that lecture, and also in the Camelot Gallery, we’re re-entering the world of self-publishing. We will particularly be focusing on photobooks, which are photographic books published at the artists’ own expense. The panel will be moderated by Maryna Tomaszewska, artist, curator, editor-in-chief of “TO! Periodyk Najgorszy”. The history of self-publishing in Poland and around the world, its current state and future will be discussed by the editor-in-chief of “Wydawnictwa 40000 malarzy”, Kuba Banasiak, artist and editor of DIK Fagazine , “Karol Radziszewski”, Michael WoliĹski, editor of the irregularly published “Piktogram” and PaweĹ Jarodzki, artist, and creator Poland’s most famous artzine – Luxus.
The torrent of a subject, repeatedly exposed by the media, arouses great controversy even among the most apolitical. It is a challenge which amateurs and professional photographers have attempted to deal with. “Ĺukasz Gniadek” succeeded in finding the key to show the event, which became a phenomenon. “The cycle of documentary portraits defenders of the cross taking place on Krakowskie PrzedmieĹcie in Warsaw in spite of night and bad weather stood out decisively against the backdrop of other works sent to the fourth round of the fotopolis.pl pentathlon,” writes Marcin Grabowiecki, editor of fotopolis.pl. To get acquainted with the work of Ĺukasz Gniadek, punctually at 19:00, we’d like to invite you to ul. Brzozowa 15 to Cafe Pracownia.
At 21:00 in Miejsce, as part of Photomonth in Krakow 2011, there will be a presentation on self-publishing at the CzuĹoĹÄ Gallery. On display will be limited edition self-published photobooks with “photo essays” by artists collaborating with CzuĹoĹÄ. This inaugural package of photo-zines will be accompanied by powerful sounds by the capital’s DJ collective Warsaw City Rockers.
