From the Beach to the Printing House: The Festival’s First Saturday

News date: 2011-05-14

Our traditional annual game has changed its formula slightly this time: this year we’re not kicking the ball... and we’ll meet on the beach, where we’ll play a beach volleyball match (the beach on the Vistula next to the Hotel Forum).

The sporty atmosphere’ll calm down at 12.00 for the vernissage of the ShowOFF Section. Corporation by Maciej Nowaczyk is a series of works depicting the space of office work through the prism of elements and detail. The careful compositions of seemingly trivial stationery, pencils, pins, etc. are, from Nowaczyk’s persepctive, abstract, aesthetic images.

From 13.00 we’ll be meeting at the Bunkier Sztuki Contemporary Art Gallery. The guest curators of this year's Photomonth in Krakow, Adam Broomberg and Oliver Chanarin, will give a guided tour around the Alias. Survey exhibition, the key to their project, and talk about the concept and the works and artists collected in Bunkier and who use the heteronym strategy in their art. The ceremonial opening of the exhibition is scheduled for 14.30.

Between 15.00 and 18.00, get ready for the culmination of openings for exhibitions in the Main Programme. For the reception, we’d like to invite you to a branch of the National Museum in Krakow – the Stanisław Wyspiański Museum in the Szołayski Townhouse, where you’ll be able to view exhibitions created under the following aliases: Marine Lazarre, Bernando Soares, Anonymous, c.1982, Gerald D’Amato, and James Wyatt. There are also Alias: The Lover in the “Krypta u Pijarów” Gallery, Alias: C. at the Museum of the History of Photography, Alias: Dora Fobert at the Museum of Stained Glass, Alias: Ezekiel Stark and Alias: I remember at the Ethnographic Museum.

Saturday's reception doesn’t exhaust our events for today. In the afternoon we have planned three more vernissages of exhibitions presented as part of the ShowOFF Section. At 17.30 in the ATTIS Art Gallery – Ryszard Lachman we invite you to Artur Jastrzębski’s exhibition The Great Water in Paprocany, a cycle seductive in the unreal aura provided by the all-pervasive water.

At 18.00 we open Mateusz Sadowski’s Entwine at the ArteFactory Gallery, and at 20.00 in the Museum of Municipal Engineering – Don’t mess with Texas by Tomasz Liboski and Michał Jędrzejowski

Tomorrow will be the first meeting of the self-publishing block. At 19:00 in the Camelot Gallery and the Foundation for the Visual Arts, the creator of the Self Publish, Be Happy project – Bruno Ceschel – will talk about his work and also present the latest photobooks. This presentation will be non-standard: Bruno, along with Sarah Entwistle, has set up an installation-library.

At the end of this exciting day, come and join us at Klub Drukarnia. At 21.30 Slide Nite will begin – a night-show of press photos, this time concentrated in one place: in the square in front of Drukarnia. On this occasion there’ll be material from Agencja Gazeta, Aurora Photos, Hollandse Hoogt Laife, Forum, Napo Images, Noor Images, Panos Pictures, Reporters, Sputnik Photos, Tendance Floue, and Visavis.pl. The party at Drukarnia, which starts at about 22.30, will close the event-filled second day of the opening weekend.

Come and join us!
