At high noon we’ll be at Galeria Camelot for the meeting with Roger Ballen and Boarding House. Born in New York in 1950, Ballen was destined to inherit a love of photography from his mother, closely connected with the prestigious Magnum Photos agency. The author’s photography remains closely linked to his psychology education – he devotes a large part of his work to people on the fringes of social norms. Ballen’s creativity evolved over the years, leading him from reportage photography at the turn of 1970s to increasingly more elaborate, even orchestrated images, which gained him fame across the world. For several years the artist’s key point of focus has been a boarding house near Johannesburg housing impoverished labourers, charlatans, criminals and drifters, filled with odours and noises. The photos blur boundaries between documentary photography and painting, sculpture and theatre, almost completely erasing them.
